What is Neurology?
Neurology is the medical specialty
that pertains to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders
of the brain and nervous system. Some common disorders neurologists
treat include stroke, headaches, epilepsy, sleep disorders, brain
tumors, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple
sclerosis.
Neurologists serve as principal care providers or as consultants
to other doctors. In a consulting role, a neurologist will
diagnose and treat a neurological disorder and then advise the
primary care physician who is managing the patient's overall health.
Although neurologists can recommend surgical treatment, they do
not perform surgery.
Many neurologists may also have additional training in one specific
area of neurology, such as stroke, epilepsy, or movement disorders.
This area is called a subspecialty.
