| What is Ophthalmology?
Ophthalmology is the medical specialty concerned with the anatomy,
function, and diseases of the eye. An ophthalmologist is
a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care -- providing
the full spectrum of eye care, from prescribing glasses and contact
lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery.
Some ophthalmologists choose to train in a special area of eye
care, such as glaucoma or pediatric ophthalmology. This
area is called a subspecialty. Many ophthalmologists also devote
time to scientific research, seeking the causes of and cures for
various eye diseases and vision problems.
