Radiology Prep Sheet
Please follow the instructions exactly as indicated unless your doctor has advised you otherwise. If you have any questions about your exam(s) or the prep required, please call Affinity Health Group at (229) 391-4113.

PREP #1: Gastrointestinal Procedures: GI and Small Bowel; Ultrasound Procedures: Aorta, Gallbladder, Abdomen (complete), and Liver.

  • Eat a light and fat-free supper the night before the x-ray [clear soup (bouillon), flavored jello (no fruit), fruit juices, soft drinks, black coffee or tea but with no milk or cream].
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (not even water). Prescription medication may be taken as scheduled with as little water as possible.

PREP #2: Gastrointestinal Procedures: Colon (BE); Urology Procedures: IVP
DAY BEFORE EXAM:

  • Noon: Eat a light meal (clear soup, small portions of skinless chicken or turkey, fish, white bread with no butter).
  • 1 p.m.:Drink at least 8 oz. of clear liquids (water, strained fruit juice, clear broth, black coffee or tea but with no milk or cream).
  • 3 p.m.: Drink at least 8 oz. of clear liquids.
  • 5 p.m.: Drink at least 8 oz. of clear liquids.
  • 6 p.m.: Dinner (all clear liquids).
  • 7 p.m.: Take Fleet Phospho-soda Solution. Pour solution into half a glass of cold, clear liquid and drink. Follow immediately with at least 8 oz. of clear liquids. The solution takes effect in about an hour.
  • 8 p.m.: Drink at least 8 oz. of clear liquids.
  • 9 p.m.: Drink at least 8 oz. of clear liquids.
  • 9:30 p.m.: Take four Fleet Bisacodyl Tablets with a full glass of water. Swallow whole; do not chew.

DAY OF EXAMINATION

  • Do not eat breakfast.
  • Use Fleet Bisacodyl Suppository. Remove foil wrapping from suppository. While lying on your side, gently insert the suppository into your rectum. Wait 15 minutes before evacuating.

PREP #3: Mammography

  • Wash breasts and under your arms before you come in for the exam.
  • DO NOT use deodorant, perfumes, powders, ointment, or anything in the underarm area until the exam is complete.

PREP #4: Ultrasound Procedures: Pancreas, Abdominal Aorta, and Kidney

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (not even water). Prescription medication may be taken as scheduled with as little water as possible.

PREP #5: Pelvic Ultrasound Procedures: Pregnancy and Non-OB

  • Drink 32 oz. (one quart) of non-carbonated liquid (fruit juice, coffee, tea, or water) one hour before your exam. Do NOT empty your bladder.
PREP #6: CT Scan Procedures: Head, Orbit, Neck (soft tissue), and Thorax

PREP #7: CT Scan Procedures: Abdomen and Pelvis

  • Please check with your doctor about the need for bloodwork before your exam.
  • Obtain a barium preparation from Affinity BEFORE THE EXAM .
  • Drink one container of barium mixture at 9 p.m. the night before the exam.
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (except the barium mixture below). Prescription medication may be taken as scheduled with as little water as possible.
  • Drink the second container of barium mixture one hour before your appointment.
  • You will have to hold Glucophage for 48 hours after CT.

If your appointment is scheduled after 1 p.m., you may eat a light breakfast. Drink one container of barium mixture at 8 a.m. and then the second container an hour before your appointment. Nothing to eat or drink after 8 a.m. except the barium.

Nuclear Medicine Prep

  • Bone Scan: May eat and drink fluids. Scan three hours after injection. Scan time is approximately one hour.
  • Hida Scan: No barium studies prior. NPO after midnight (no food/drink). No pain medicine. Scan time is 1.5 hours.
  • Muga: NPO after midnight. No heart medicine. Scan time is approximately one hour.
  • Renal Scan: May eat and needs to drink fluids prior to coming for scan. Scan time is one hour.
  • Stress/Rest (Myocardial) Scan: NPO after midnight. No cardiac or inhaler medicine. Patient must be prepared to walk on a treadmill (tennis shoes). Plan on being at Affinity for at least three hours (Stress/Rest).
  • VQ (Lung) Scan: Chest x-ray needs to be done. No prep. Scan time is 1.5 hours.

No Prep
The following procedures do not require any preparation:

  • Bone Density
  • CT Facial
  • CT Sinus
  • CT Spine
  • Esophagram
  • Ultrasound: Carotid Doppler
  • Ultrasound: Extremity Vein
  • Ultrasound: Thyroid
  • Ultrasound: Trans Vaginal
