Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care

What is Pulmonary Medicine & Critical Care?

Pulmonary Medicine is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lungs, such as bronchitis or asthma, as well as more serious illnesses, such as cystic fibrosis or lung cancer. Physicians work closely with patients to help improve their day-to-day activities and overall quality of life.

Medical care may include a team of dedicated professionals, including doctors, nurses, respiratory, physical, and occupational therapists, and exercise specialists. Healthy behaviors, such as quitting smoking and exercise, are encouraged and supervised.

Physicians who specialize in Pulmonary Medicine also treat critical diseases that may require lung transplants.

Critical Care is the medical specialty that focuses on the care of seriously ill patients of all ages--from infant to adult. Critical Care professionals provide the highest quality care for all patients facing life-threatening conditions and work toward the best possible outcome.

The area of Critical Care includes several highly-trained professionals who work in specialized care units, including physicians certified in a medical specialty, critical care nurses, critical care pharmacists/pharmocologists, and respiratory therapists. Other critical care professionals may include physical/occupational therapists, technicians, social workers, dieticians, and members of the clergy.
